Designed by the world famous Hawtree Limited,renowned golf course architects since 1912,Malkins Bank opened in 1976. It has matured into a great test of golf with tree lined fairways and undulating features bordering the Trent & Mersey Canal.A small river flows through the entire golf course. The layout of the course is such that it will offer a challenge to all levels of golfer.
The first hole gives the golfers the chance to warm up with a wide fairway and a green that tests your putting ability. Holes 2,3,4,5 and 6 are picturesque and of increasing difficulty ensuring the course is both challenging and enjoyable. The par 5 7th is the stand out hole of the front nine. The 8th and 9th are testing holes even for the most experienced golfers. The 10th hole offers no respite with a par 3 which is guarded by 2 large bunkers. This green will test putters of all standards. The 11th hole offers a slight break off the tee but the approach to the green needs to carry a large protecting bunker on the front left. The tee shot on the 12th hole requires precision off the tee down the left side of the fairway in order to avoid blind-siding yourself on your approach to the large two tiered green ,complete with hazard at the rear.The 13th is the most challenging tee shot of the entire course as the fairway moves from left to right with a stream to catch any wayward tee shots. The approach to this well guarded green needs to be straight down the centre of the fairway,resisting the temptation to attack the pin. The course's signature par 3 14th is a short hole but deceptively difficult as there is a tree obstructing the green together with a deep bunker on the right. This green is difficult to read and will provide a challenge. The 15th offers a wide fairway but with out of bounds down the left you need to be confident with your shot. The green is open but anything wayward will set problems and be sure to raise the score for most golfers. A difficult sloping green at the 16th probably requires a mid-iron approach for the best outcome. The closing par 4 18th has a sheltered tee shot onto an undulating, tree lined fairway capable of ruining any round though a straight drive down the middle gives every chance of the closing birdie.
