n recent years the course at Eccleston Park has undergone a period of extensive redevelopment in order to create a challenging but fair test of golf for players of all abilities. Under the guidance of Course Manager Jon Wilson and his team, the course is now maturing nicely, and feedback from both members and visitors has been extremely positive, especially with regards to the quality of the greens all year round.
While not extensively long, the course plays far from easy. Course management and position off the tee is often more important than distance, with links style wispy rough waiting for that wayward shot. Water comes into play on a number of holes and the tricky prevailing wind makes club selection vital. This is particularly true on the 14th – a long par 5 with the approach shot to the green played over a lake.
For those who haven’t visited Eccleston Park for a while it is time to come back and see the improvement. Recent developments have included the addition of several new fairway and greenside bunkers and a new tee on the 6th, and an extensive tree planting programme which has undoubtedly given the course more character and definition. Winter 2012 saw the creation of a feature sandstone wall at the front of the green on the par 3 8th.
